Warwick sets up with Canon EOS 5D MkII

Incredibly rich and beautiful images are being shot in full HD 1920×1080 resolution on the remarkable DSLR Canon EOS 5D MkII with its trademark short depth-of-field look. The full frame CMOS sensor and Digic4 processor has got the industry buzzing with excitement at the possibilities of this camera. While by no means becoming the motion picture camera to replace all others, the 5D is an outstanding and very affordable unit.

Warwick has recently acquired one of these beauties with the best DSLR mounting rig on the market from Vocas and a range of lens options.

The kit includes the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L Series and 70-200mm F2.8 L Series lenses with 2x Extender. The 5D is mounted on the Vocas rail support with Follow Focus and 2 Stage 4×4″ Rotatable Matte Box. For hand-held work it has a shoulder support and two handgrips. A Zacuto Z Finder Pro 3x viewfinder completes the kit.

Two videos selected for SoundKilda

The Music Video event of the St Kilda Short Film Festival is SoundKilda.

Warwick has two of his recent music videos screening in this years awards. Pete Murray’s “Chance To Say Goodbye” shot naturalistically on 16mm, and the Powderfinger new classic “Burn Your Name” shot on Varicam have both been selected for the highly regarded Melbourne event this year.

Declan and The Antics new MV

Visible spectrum light is what we photograph 99% of the time for obvious reasons. We can see it! But just outside our ability lies the Infra Red and Ultra Violet bandwidth. IR, or more correctly “Thermal” cameras, “see” heat energy as images.

Warwick recently used a thermal camera to capture video for a music video for the Melbourne band, Declan and The Antics. He has used thermal cameras in aerial cinematography where they can be very useful in discerning objects from above and suggested the use of the imaging for his latest clip.

In IR, you can select an array of palettes to display the thermal images. The choices can be Grey Scale, Red, Green or Rainbow for example. Director Natasha Pincus chose the multi-coloured look of the rainbow to suit the song’s very danced-up style. The camera can be set to separate the subject’s temperatures in a range of degrees celsius and with a variable span width. As such, Warwick manipulated each set up and scene to show the most bizarre mixes of light and shade and colour.

Chiang Mai festival backdrop for Powderfinger clip

Thailand’s annual festival of Loi Krathong is famously at its most wondrous on the Mae Ping River in Chiang Mai. Over a couple of nights around the 12th full moon, the night brings the incredibly awesome sight of hundreds of lanterns rising into the sky, their flames burning below fuelling the flight, and candle-lit banana leaf boats adorned with flowers and incense floating down the river.

Australian mega-band Powderfinger travelled to Chiang Mai with starkraving productions’ Natasha Pincus and DP Warwick Field to shoot the music video for their major single “Burn Your Name”. The track is from the recently released and much anticipated album “Golden Rule”.

A Panasonic Varicam fitted Warwick’s needs for this shoot. All footage was shot at night and variable frame rates up to 50p were anticipated. The camera’s dynamic range and film record gamma setting made it a good option for the cinematic look under dark conditions. The entire project was filmed with Warwick operating with an EasyRig and apart from a couple of tiny hand-held battery operated LED litepanels, it was shot using available light from the festival. This added to the rich colours and texture of the clip which has been highly praised by the band, management and fans.

Sarah Blasko “We Won’t Run”

“We Won’t Run” is the title of the latest music video from Sarah Blasko’s new album “As Day Follows Night”.

Collaborating again with starkraving productions, Warwick shot this clip with the RED ONE camera and an Angenieux 25 - 250 HR zoom. The concept is simple and beautiful but the execution was incredibly complex requiring a hugely co-ordinated effort from the crew to achieve the 3 stage 30 ft dolly move and the opposing 10:1 zoom in both directions.

On screen it effectively looks like a pull back, but in order to create the perspective shifts relevant to the concept’s illusory nature it required much more than that. Several lyric cues had to be hit spot on with frame size and lighting cues to match. With MV budgets getting thinner every year, the time:personnel:equipment ratio was demanding.

The “eye” artwork was designed by artist and animator Nicholas Kallincos and the scenic artist was Howard Clark. The very skilled crew included 1st AC Andrew Jerram, Key Grip Rob Hansford, Gaffer Michael Hughes and RED dude Pete Wells. The challenge presented to them was met and conquered with brilliant professionalism.

The clip was launched a couple of weeks back and has been given an incredible reception.
